Fortnite opens its $100 million war chest – first official ESports tournament arrives

Fortnite, the largest and most popular free game in the world right now, just got $100 million in prize pool money to venture into eSports. The investment made by Epic Games, the developer behind Fortnite, means that $100 million will fund the prize pools for Fortnite competitions, which will kick off later this year. As far as competitive gaming goes, that prize pool is a large one. But it makes sense for a gaming phenomenon that rakes in $223 million a month, according to SuperData.Gaming phenomenon Fortnite just received $100 million in prize pool money from Epic Games to fuel its venture into competitive gaming.The sum is a large one for the world of eSports.

The Fortnite Team wrote, “We’re getting behind competitive play in a big way, but our approach will be different – we plan to be more inclusive, and focused on the joy of playing and watching the game.”

Epic Games,the fortnite team just announce biggest Esports tournament with a grand prize of $8 milliion. In order to take a part in this competition, according to Epic Games, invitation have already been sent for the tournament and participants will be made up of community and Pro fortnite players.

Changing format

When it comes to the format of the competition, well this is set to change week to week, as are the competitors. 

In all there will be an 8-week series of competitions, with the first being a $250,000 Duos competition. 

Some of the confirmed players, according to Dexerto, include OpTic Gaming content creator Jack ‘CouRage’ Dunlop and OpTic pro ‘BaldyKun’, Twitch streamer Valkrae, Team Liquid pro players ‘Chaps’ and ’72hrs’ and more. 

Epic Games originally trialled an esports tournament at this year’s E3, where celebrities and pro gamers battles it out for a charity prize bundle of $3 million.

A stadium was filled for the final and, at one point, 700,000 concurrent people were watching the Twitch stream.

Fortnite’s Battle Royale mode currently has about 45 million people playing across a wide range of devices, including PlayStation 4, Xbox, PCs and Macs, and iPhones. It’s coming to Android phones later this summer. It’s also completely free.
