The Netgear Nighthawk Pro Gaming XR500 is the best router in the world for gamers. Design

The XR500 looks like something straight out of the show “GamingBots”. Its wide, flat design is similar to others in the Nighthawk line, but this one has sharp angles all around it. The myriad LED lights on the front are pretty bright and distracting, but you can flip a switch in back to shut them off. A wall mount option would have been nice, but the router is pretty cool looking, so displaying it on a shelf won’t be too problematic.

The Netgear Nighthawk XR500 Pro is a dual-band AC2600 router. Its 5GHz band is rated at 1733Mbps, the 2.4GHz band at 800Mbps. It has four powered antennas. Where the two rear-mounted antennae can be swapped out for any threaded BNC design, those on the corners have been made with extensions to reach connectors placed deep inside the case.

On the back are all the Ethernet ports (4 LAN + WAN), power on/off, reset, lights on/off and the power connection. Two USB 3.0 ports are hidden inside a recess on the left (looking front on), and WPS and WIFI on buttons are on the upper surface to the front right.

The ‘beak’ of the case is where all the LED indicator lights are, and reveal the use of the two frequency ranges, each LAN port and even if the Guest account is active. In the XR500 there are two of these modules, each handling an independent 4×4:4 MIMO configuration. One chip is focused purely on 802.11ac and 802.11an operations, while the other covers 802.11b.g/n modes.

DumaOS

One of the special features of DumaOS is a technology that Netgear branded ‘Geo-Filter’, which aims to connect online gamers to the server that’s the geographically nearest and not the first that responds to a connection request.

The device manger show all devices that are connected to network in DumaOS. It has good UX design, which isn’t traditionally a strong point of router software.
