Acer Predator Helios 300 Review

The Acer Predator Helios 300 is best budget gaming laptop of 2018. Most of the companies offers gaming laptop with same specs at very high cost, but Acer is actually putting the money where its worth the product. As gaming is one of the brightest spot in the PC market, which has been in decline for a while this year, but seems to be good now.

Acer Predator Helios 300 is very powerful machine which can handle most demanding games at high to ultra-high settings. It has a refresh rate of 144Hz, which you’ll rarely see in gaming latops. It offers a powerful processor, VR-ready Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 GPU with less price as compared to other gaming laptops. The price of this gaming laptop start at $1,100 (appox. Rs.129,999) on Amazon with a Core i7-7700HQ processor and GeForce GTX 1060 graphics card. If you want to increase RAM and storage than price is high. Acer also offers another configuration that has SSD with 1TB mechanical hard drive, but its cost up to $300 premium.

The laptop chassis includes plenty of plastic and aluminium, as you’d expect in a gaming notebook in this price range. The metal chassis has gun metal finish, black colour with red accents and geometric cuts at the edges of the laptop. The metal lid and keyboard deck are also made out of metal sheet which is placed over a plastic base. This Acer predator lettering and logo in sliver at the top cover, while at the bottom has two plastic cover, easy-to-remove compartments for the hard drive and RAM, which you can upgrade. This laptop is available in black as well as sliver edition also.

As any good gaming notebook should, it has a plenty of ports i.e main advantage. On top of two USB 2.0 ports and headphone jack that are located on the right side of laptop. On the left side there is an Ethernet jack, USB 3.0 port, SD card slot HDMI output and USB type-c port. You also get Bluetooth as Qualcomm made gigabit Wifi adapter.

The 15.6-inch IPS LCD panel, 1080p display on the Acer Predator is sharp and has stronger blue and magenta hues display colour give better performance while gaming and watching movies. The display also boost at a 144Hz refresh rate, which you don’t typically see in budget gaming laptops. As the refresh rate is high most of the games run smoothly at 60fps without any issues. This is a major upgrade from the 2017 model to help minimize blur and make up for dropped frames. The front camera has 720p resolution which is good enough for making good quality video calls and conferences. The colour saturation is decent and had no issues differentiating colours while playing games. The predator’s display almost covers 81% of the sRGB colour gamut, but falling below the 15-inch laptop average 94% and the Leopard Pro upto 165%.

We actually like the RGB keyboard on this gaming laptop. Normally professional gamers uses mechanical keyboard but it also have similar design. It is very confortable and keys are not completely flat, slightly concave. There are a few difference on the keyboard. The Shift key and the top arrow key are very close together — far closer than any other two keys on the keyboard — and the right arrow key takes up some space in the number pad. Unlike the keyboard on the similarly priced Strix, the Predator’s keyboard is backlit only in red; it doesn’t have full RGB lighting.

The touchpad on the other hand is quite good and simple to use. Acer is using Windows precision touchpad. The trackpad tracks well, is precise and large enough to be used with your thumb. The  touchpad is large enough at 10.7 x 7.8 cm (~4.2 x 3 in). Overall touchpad gave us a very good impression.

The predator has solid feature like 2.8 GHz Intel Core i7-7700HQ, 16GB RAM and 256GB solid state drive, which is more enough for different multitasking. It can handle many features at a time. If you playing game with high settings or watching 1080p videos simultaneously than also you don’t feel any lag in latop. Predator also contain impressive feature of fast transferring of data. In very seconds of time it can transfer data  upto 4 to 5GB of data which contain media files or docs.

As gaming laptops needs strong graphics capabilities which can handle ultra-high settings for better performance. Acer predator has main focus on pure upgradation of GPU performance. So lets compare laptop gaming performace at 1080p resolution in Tomb Raider game.

The battery life of predator also has good performace level, it ran for 6 hours and 55 minutes on battery test with simultaneously oprating at multiple tasks. Compared to other gaming laptops, this is a decent number. Of course, it’s nowhere near what you’d expect from an Ultrabook or other hyper-portable laptop. That’s not this laptop’s purpose, so don’t leave the house without that power cord if you go with this laptop.

The video card of this laptop is absolutely awesome. It is rare to find a gaming laptop in this price range with something as good as like GTX 1050 Ti. Actual price of this video card is very high so that is advantage of this laptop. This video card also supports 4k gaming experience.
