Samsung has dominated the SSD market recently with there high performance and cost effective drives ,both in the lower end SATA segment and high end M.2NVMe space. Samsung new 970 series comes with EVO models for mainstream and pro models for professional users.
Let’s first take a look at what the new drives offer. The main feature is that both new drives claim a sequential read speed of up 3,500MB/sec. Sequential write speeds have jumped forward for both drives too. The 500GB Evo, for instance has gone from 1,800MB/sec to 2300MB/sec while the 1TB Pro has gone from 2,100MB/sec to 2,700MB/sec. Random read and write performance has also improved,with the 500GB 970Evo claiming 370K IOPS read and 450K IOPS write,compared to 330K IOPS read and write from the 960 Evo. Similarly the 1TB 960 Pro has moved from 440K IOPS read and 360K IOPS write to a flat 500K IOPS across the broad.
Samsung 970 Evo 1TB normally priced at $449,if you are looking at drive that costs 30 dollars less,meanwhile there is now a 2TB version of NVM SSD also available at $849 otherwise,the 250GB and 500GB drives still cost same $119 and $229 respective to their predecessors.
The performance of 500GB 970 Evo and the 1TB 970 Pro both drives are tested perfectly with high speed devices. In CrystalDiskMark,both drives hit their claimed 3500MB/sec read speed as well as their respective write speeds,putting them at the top of the charts for drives we have tested. The difference between this drives make to windows boot speed is small compared with other fast drives that it is irrelevant. Even compared with SATA SSDs,you are saving second or two and that is largely true for games too. For most of the users the 960 Evo was already overkill,and the 970 drives just hammer that point home. The benchmarks are amazing,but we are talking diminishing returns unless you are using specific IO-heavy workloads.
The Samsung 970 Evo also just barely edges out its competition, the WD Black PCIe SSD, with faster random reads and writes, sequential reads as well as 10GB file and folder transfers.
